JROTC at Fort Mose Historic State Park

Cadets from the Matanzas High School JROTC program recently took an immersive educational field trip tracing Florida’s rich military legacy through a dynamic day of team building, leadership development, and historical discovery. The journey began at Fort Mose Historic State Park, the site of North America's first legally sanctioned free African American settlement. Here, cadets examined early tactical defense strategies and learned how the Fort Mose militia courageously defended Spanish Florida during the 18th century, grounding their understanding of diversity and fortitude in early American military history.
Continuing their exploration, the battalion traveled to the Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine, the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States. Walking through the historic coquina fortress, cadets gained practical insight into garrison life, bastion architecture, and artillery operations, seeing firsthand how geographic positioning and structural engineering shaped tactical command across centuries.
The unit concluded its trip at the Florida National Guard Headquarters at St. Francis Barracks, bridging ancient history and modern readiness. Engaging with leadership and learning
about the Guard’s modern role in state emergency response and national security allowed cadets to connect historic citizen-soldier traditions to contemporary career pathways. Beyond absorbing historical facts, the cadets utilized the day to strengthen peer bonds, build unit cohesion, and reflect on the timeless military values of integrity, duty, and selfless service. The experience left the Matanzas JROTC cadet corps with a renewed sense of pride, camaraderie, and commitment to excellence as future leaders.
