Dear Pirate Family,
Late in December, we were notified that Matanzas High School earned an A rating for the second year in a row. With that great news, we have had a great start to our second semester and of this writing there are less than 80 school days left in the school year. In fact, there are fewer days left for our senior students whose last day will be May 22nd, followed by graduation on May 30th.
Some might say that it’s all down hill from here, but I don’t want to refer to it that way. Traditionally, students’ grades drop lower the closer that we get to the end of the year. This is especially true for seniors because of that dreaded bug, “senioritis.” Many students fall into the habit of not completing or turning in assignments. To help fight this trend, we have begun a program called Academic Afterschool Assistance, or Triple-A. Teachers assign students to this 90-minute afterschool program if they have not completed and turned in their homework, projects or other assignments. It is a time in which students are to focus on their missed assignments and complete the work. More information about this program may be found on our website.
Spring begins our testing season. I am including some dates below. If your child is testing, please help them by making sure that they are well rested and have eaten a good breakfast.
- 02/25/14 FCAT Writes (10th grade)
- 02/26/14 SAT (11th grade)
- 04/08/14 FCAT Reading (9th and 10th grade)
- Late April – May End of Course Exams in U.S. Hist., Geom., Alg. I, and Bio.
- 05/20 – 05/21 Senior Final Exams
- 06/02 – 06/05 Underclassmen Final Exams
I know that we will have a great second semester because we have great students, teachers and staff. I urge everyone to keep his or her minds focused and finish strong.
